LIFE LINES

Greetings to everyone, and welcome to the assemblies and Bible study of the Lord’s body that meets in this place.  If you are visiting the church here today, we appreciate the fact that you’ve come to worship and study with those who are members of this congregation, and we want to make you feel welcome among God’s people.  We are grateful for those who visit with us, and do pray that, first, you benefit from the services today, and, second, that you would want to return and be with us in the future.

With Family Vacation Bible School completed, the new Bible school year begun, and the new curriculum being used in our Sunday morning classes, what’s next?  There is always something to look forward to, and now is no exception to that general rule.  On August 15th, we will host our second annual Friday Night Sing at the 38th Street building.  Many congregations participate in this time of fellowship and praising God in song, and we are privileged to have other members of the church, and guests, join with us in these good activities.  Note this date, and plan to be present that evening, if at all possible.  Last year’s sing was great, and we can anticipate an inspiring and uplifting time this year.  The singing begins at 7:00 P.M.

Let’s enjoy this day that God has given us, and have a great week.

                                    -- Lance

The world renowned contralto, Marian Anderson, was once asked why she always used the first person plural, “we,” instead of a simple “I” when she spoke about herself.

This was her answer:  “Possibly,” she said, “because the longer one lives, the more one realizes that there is no particular thing that you can do alone.  With the execution of the work that we do there are many people – those who wrote the music, those who made the piano on which the accompanist is playing, the accompanist who lends support to the performances.  So the ‘I’ in it is very small indeed.”

     She makes a good point.

Perhaps today, or this week, you could spend some time to think about all the people in your past who have had a positive impact on your life over the years.  Who are those people?

If you made such a list, would there be any teachers on the list?  Any preachers or elders?  Your parents, of course, or perhaps an aunt or an uncle?

Would there be any friends on your list?  Any coworkers?  What about the doctors and nurses who brought you back to healthy living during a crisis?

It is so true:  we can’t say that the life we’ve lived, we’ve been able to live it alone.  In fact human beings, in comparison to other species of life, require more care at birth than many others.

Let’s give thanks to God for everyone who has helped us, assisted us, along our life’s journey, and ask God to empower us to help others as well.

Family Matters

Prayer List:  Barb Hunter was in Aultman Hospital as last week began.  She had been diagnosed with pneumonia, and some other possible physical problems.  Jean Howell went into the Doctors campus of Affinity Medical Center on Monday of last week for surgery on her shoulder.  Don Dillehay, the brother of Esther Nourse, who lives in Mobile, Alabama, had recent small intestine and colon surgery; they had an “umbrella” put in to stop clots resulting from bleeding from the bladder.  He may need another surgery.  Gladys Heid, Brian’s mother, will also be having surgery in the future because of her gallbladder problems.  Mary Pool’s daughter, Gretchen Tripp, is getting closer to having both a kidney and pancreas transplant, which will be done at Tampa, Florida.  Pray that it can happen soon.  Continue to pray for:  Bonnie Day (the daughter-in-law of Ellen); Rich Stalnaker (Sharon’s husband); Gwen Rose; Marty Morris (Darlene and Marty’s son); Nancy Jensen, Kathryn Landers, and others with cancer; those who are at home and ill; those in military service (Dan Garrison, Matt Laubacher, Justin May, and David Woofter); our Shut-Ins; and the leadership of the 38th Street church.

Our Sympathy:   We offer our condolences to those members of the 38th Street family who have recently lost loved ones to death.
George Reese, the grandfather of Bryan Reed, died on Friday, July 11th, after an extended illness.  His funeral service was Tuesday of last week.
Also, Harold Mayberry, a brother of Bill’s, passed away in California, where he had lived most of his adult life.
And, the police officer, Earl Schoeneman, retired from the Canton force, who was killed in his home, was a cousin of Penny Hunter.  His funeral was conducted last Monday, the 14th.
To all these individuals and their families we express our sympathy.

Leaving:  This past Sunday, July 13th, was the last time Jim Patton would be worshipping with the church at 38th Street as one of its members.  Jim sold his house in Canton and has moved to a new residence out of the area.  We will miss Jim and all the work and service he has given to the Lord since becoming a member of the congregation.  We wish him well and many blessings from God in the future.  Jim says, “I want to thank everyone for the kindness and brotherly love shown me.”  Thank you, Jim, for the blessing you have been to the 38th Street family.

Thank You:  Thank you, my Christian family, for your cards, calls, visits, and prayers.  I never in my life thought I would have a heart attack, and not even be aware of that attack, but low and behold, I had two.  The damage to my heart resulted in congestive heart failure and I found out I could not breathe or walk because of the swellings which followed the heart attacks.  My health is improving.  My doctor is testing medicines to find the right “mix” for me, and knowing you all are with me in spirit has calmed my shock and fears.  Such a blessing!  In Christ, Gwen Rose.
On behalf of my entire family, thank you so much, our 38th Street family, for the love, cards, prayers, and visits you have all blessed us with during my dad’s declining health and death.  Thanks also for the love and compassion you have supplied Mark as he has cared for Dad and Mom so diligently. (And continues to care for mom).  You all make the meaning of God’s love so clear.  In Christ, Gwen Rose (for the family of Groff Starkey).

Open House: There will be an open house on the occasion of Homer Lively’s 85th birthday, on Sunday, August 3rd, from 2-4 PM, here at the building.  Please sign up on the east wing bulletin board if you are attending.  No gifts, please.

Birthday:  On July 30th, Lynna Beaber will be reaching that magic number of “80”.  Let’s all send her a card to let her know we love her.

Free To A Good Home:  Terry and Carol Pyles have a set of Britannica Encyclopedias that they would like to give away.  If you are interested, see them or contact the office.

Birthday Fellowship:  This month’s fellowship will be the ice cream social, on Sunday evening, July 27th.  Bring your favorite toppings for ice cream and plan to stay!

NOTICE:  Any personal teaching items in the teachers’ supply room need to be REMOVED or CLEARLY LABELED by next week.  Any items in the classrooms such as curriculum, supplies, bulletin board materials, etc. that are not being used need to be returned to the teachers’ supply room so that all items can be sorted and organized to be easily found and readily available for teachers.

Worship Time:  There will be NO “Worship Time” for the month of July, but will resume in August.
