LIFE LINES

Greetings on this first Sunday of August, and welcome to everyone, especially our visitors.  We appreciate those who come to be a part of the assemblies and Bible studies here at the 38th Street church, and invite our guests to join us whenever they can.

Today I begin a series of lessons on the topic of the grace of God, something all of us need not only to be reminded of, but also to better understand.  We begin this morning with “The Riches Of God’s Grace”, and will continue to examine this important subject from a biblical perspective for the next three Sunday mornings.  We will also continue the Sunday evening studies of women in the scriptures.  This evening our focus is upon Lydia, the first “European” convert to Christianity that we have knowledge of.  Then, on the following two Sunday evenings, we’ll devote time to talking about the sisters Martha and Mary, and their close relationship with Jesus during His ministry on earth.

I’m looking forward to these lessons, and I pray you will be at these assemblies so that we can learn together and deepen our knowledge of God’s great book.

Two things that bear mentioning are coming up in the next two weeks.  First, the start of another group of Bible classes on Wednesday evenings, following the break for singing this past Wednesday.  You can see topics, and locations, listed below.  Take advantage of the good instruction and fellowship that goes on each week in these classes.

Second, on Friday, August 15th, we will host an area-wide sing.  This, too, is an opportunity for fellowship with brethren and friends from all over the region.  The singing begins at 7:00 P.M.  Look on the back of the sermon outline for complete details.

It’s great that you’re here today.  Let’s rejoice in this day that God has given us, and this week to come.  God bless.

HOW DID I SPEND MY 75 YEARS?

  •             Statisticians tell us that the average life span is now around 75 years.  If you are under 30 then you think that is a long time.  If you are around my age, you are beginning to realize that is not really very long at all.
A few years ago, someone went to the trouble to research what people do with their time.  If we live to be 75, most of us will have spent –
                > 3 years, 24 hours a day, acquiring an education – grade school, high school,                college.
                > 7 years eating, 24 hours a day – some more, some less, obviously.
                > 14 years, day and night, working.
                > 5 years riding in automobiles or airplanes.
                > 5 years talking with each other – again some more and some less.
                > 1 year sick or recovering from sickness.
                > 24 years of our life sleeping!
                > 3 years reading books, magazines, and newspapers.
                > 12 years amusing ourselves – watching TV, going to the movies, fishing,                etc.
That totals 75 years.  As I looked at these statistics I began thinking.  Let us suppose that you spent every Sunday of your life, for 75 years – through infancy, childhood, adulthood, old age – worshipping during two church services each Lord’s day.  Now if you did, how much time would you have spent worshipping God?  Figure it out – the answer is less than 11 months.
Let’s double it because you have always attended two Bible classes a week.  If you have never missed a Bible class in all your life, that still just totals 11 months.
Think about that – 5 years in an automobile and just 22 months in church!  Twelve years amusing ourselves in front of a TV, and just 22 months in church.  And that is if you have always attended and never missed!
That tells us a little bit about the brevity of time and our priorities in life.
