LIFE LINES

Summer is rapidly slipping away, and the summer’s activities are completed.  Family Vacation Bible School, church camp, “Terrific Tuesdays” and the weekly meetings for young people called “Teen Night Out” are either finished or about to wrap up for another year.  The congregation hosted the “Friday Night Sing” on the 15th of this month, and has a cookout planned for today.  Thanks must go to John and Lori Oberlin and others who have helped to prepare for these and other fellowship opportunities in the past months.

As attention turns to the fall season, it’s time for the 38th Street singing group to resume their regular Sunday afternoon practices.  Their first meeting will be on September 21st, at 5:00 PM, in Room 12 in the building’s west wing.  Anyone who likes to sing can become a part of this group, and new members are always welcome.  Nancy Brown and Ray Hunt lead this activity and want to encourage both past members and new participants to come to the first practice session on September 21st.

********************

We want to welcome everyone to the 38th Street church today.  If you are visiting with the family here, we especially want you to know how grateful we are for your presence and we invite you to join us for assemblies and Bible study as often as you are able to come.

Let’s rejoice in this day that God has given us, direct our worship to Him, remember His Son as our substitute in death, and learn from His holy word.

Have a great day and week, and God bless.

                                                -- Lance

The story of Ruth is one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible.  There are many ways to approach this story.  One thing that emerges is the providence of God.
Clearly, God is at work in the lives of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz.  God’s providential leading resulted in the acceptance of a “foreigner,” an immigrant, if you please.  The house that Ruth and Boaz built is a house that eventually welcomed Jesus into the world.
Providence.  What does that word mean?  To answer that question let’s look at another story.
There’s a certain harbor in Italy that can be reached only by sailing up a narrow channel between many clusters of dangerous rocks and shoals.  Over the years, many ships have been wrecked, and navigation is hazardous.
To guide the ships safely into port, lights have been mounted on three huge poles in the harbor.  When the three lights are perfectly lined up and seen as one, the ship can safely proceed up the narrow channel.
If the pilot sees two or three lights, he knows he’s off course and in danger.
Providence is the way that God lines up the “lights” in our lives.
What are those three lights?  God give us Opportunity.  God gives us the Counsel of Trusted Friends.  God gives us the Counsel of the Word.  When all of these “lights” line up as one light, we have a strong indication of how God is leading us.

“There was never a person who did anything worth doing that he did not receive more than he gave.”

                                 --Henry Ward Beecher

Prayer List:   As the week of August 17th began, Bob Franks was a patient at Aultman Hospital, recuperating from a quadruple bypass surgery done on Wednesday, August 13th.  Bob had gone in on Monday, the 11th, for his knee surgery, but a problem with his heart was discovered and after a catheterization, he had the heart surgery.  By the start of this past week, he was doing well.  Kim Pool was to have knee surgery, also at Aultman, this past Wednesday, the 20th.  Carla Duffield, Carl Earley’s daughter, was to have her knee replacement surgery, at the Cleveland Clinic, also on Wednesday, and Gladys Heid, Brian’s mother, is scheduled for surgery to remove a part of her pancreas, and her gallbladder, on Monday, August 25th.  That surgery is also to be at the Cleveland Clinic.  Charlotte Cramblitt, a daughter of Mary Pool, was to have a heart catheterization this past Monday.  She lives in Florida, which is where Mary remains helping to take care of Gretchen Tripp, another daughter who recently underwent kidney transplant surgery.  Gretchen is doing well.  Rich Stalnaker, the husband of Sharon, was to have an MRI done this past Wednesday.  With a doctor’s visit set for Friday, more specific information on what needs to be done will be known.  Rich will be having a surgery sometime in the future.  Mary Peterson, the mother of Barb Nutter and the sister of Marlen Thompson, is not doing well, and Ethel Bach, a sister of Margaret Ring, is very ill and was hospitalized in Marietta, Ohio.  Harry Kindall has been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, which has affected his legs, and Gwen Rose was unable to attend services last Sunday because of a problem with medication.  Remember, also, those with cancer, our Shut-Ins, those at home and ill, the leadership of the 38th Street church, and those serving in the nation’s armed forces (Dan Garrison; Matt Laubacher; Justin May; David Woofter).

Death:  Our sympathy goes to Janet Hadden and the family of her brother-in-law, Clyde Hoopes, who passed away on Saturday, August 16th, after a lengthy illness.  Our prayers and condolences go to this family during the time of their loss.

Placing Membership:  It was announced on Sunday, the 17th, that Loretta Stuckey and her son, Josh, would like to be identified as members of the 38th Street family.  We welcome them and the decision to move their membership from the church at Vandalia, Ohio, as they are now living in this area.  Loretta is the daughter of Al and Charlotte Rohr.

Thank You:  Thanks to all for your prayers during the time I was waiting for my heart procedure.  I am doing very well.   Marlen Thompson.

Birthday Fellowship:   This month’s birthday celebration will be Sunday evening, August 31st, after the evening service.  Bring finger foods and plan to stay.

BirthdayErma Jefferson, a former member of the congregation here, is celebrating her 80th birthday on September 3rd.  We have been asked to help her celebrate with cards.  Her address is:  72 Orange Blossom, Eustis, FL  32726.

Everything I Needed to Know in Life I Learned from a Jigsaw Puzzle

  1. Don’t force a fit.  If something is meant to be, it will come together naturally.
  2. When things aren’t going so well, take a break.  Everything will look different when you return.
  3. Be sure to look at the big picture.  Getting hung up on the little pieces leads to frustration.
  4. Perseverance pays off.  Every important puzzle went together bit by bit, piece by piece.
  5. When one spot stops working, move to another.  But be sure to come back later.
  6. The creator of the puzzle gave you the picture as a guidebook.
  7. Variety is the spice of life.  It’s the different colors and patterns that make the puzzle interesting.
  8. Working together with friends and family makes any task fun.
  9. Establish the border first.  Boundaries give a sense of security and order.
  10. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations.  Some matches are surprising.
  11. Take time often to celebrate your successes, even little ones.
  12. Anything worth doing takes time and effort.  A great puzzle can’t be rushed.
