LIFE LINES

Greetings to everyone on this first Lord’s Day of September.  The year keeps rapidly passing and, even now, plans are being developed to close out 2008 and start 2009.  There are many opportunities for members of the 38th Street family to get involved in one or more of the ministries of the church.  Any time of the year is a good time to start such involvement.  You don’t have to wait to be asked, or wait until the new year arrives.  Just speak to Earl, Kathy Kruger, or me, or let one of the elders know of your interest in working in a particular area of the life of the church, and we can connect you with the person who leads in that area.  There is always much to do.

********************

This past Thursday morning there was another meeting of our senior saints group, called the “Young-in-Heart.”  This ministry meets regularly on the first and third Thursdays of the month, starting at 10:30 A.M.  Along with the fellowship there is a Bible study time and those who can go out for lunch together.  The group is currently studying the New Testament epistle of “Romans”.  We are not very far along in this great doctrinal exposition by the apostle Paul, so it would be easy to start this study if you’ve not been attending.

Let me again, encourage all our senior members to consider being a part of “Young-in-Heart.”  Those who do participate have a great time together and do desire to have as many as can join them in the bimonthly meetings and other special activities, like the holiday dinner in December.

The next meeting is Thursday, September 18th.  I hope to see you then.

To our visitors today we extend a cordial welcome on behalf of the 38th Street family.  We appreciate your being here today for the assemblies of the church, and invite you to join us whenever you can for both worship and Bible study.

This morning, at the worship assembly time, we will have one last lesson in a series on the subject of the grace of God.  The combined adult Bible class meeting in the auditorium will continue a study of the life of Joseph, and, this evening at the 6:00 assembly, we will be talking about the subject “Honoring The Family Name.”

To everyone, members and visitors, we again offer a welcome and may God bless us all in this week to come.

Family Matters

Prayer List:   At the start of this past week, Bob Franks remained at Aultman Hospital, continuing to recover from complications following his recent heart bypass surgery.  The pneumonia was clearing up, but Bob was still very weak.  He had an allergic reaction to the blood thinner that he’d gotten after surgery.  Hobert Littlefield was admitted to Alliance Community Hospital last week.  Kim Pool was doing well after her knee surgery, as was Carla Duffield (the daughter of Carl Earley) and Gladys Heid, Brian’s mother.  Carla was released from the rehabilitation unit at Affinity Medical Center (Massillon) the week before last.  Ina Strickling was hospitalized after falling at home and breaking her wrist and damaging a knee.  Anna Masalko was scheduled to have another stent inserted in a procedure at Mercy Medical Center this past Tuesday, September 2nd.  Rich Stalnaker, Sharon’s husband, is to have shoulder surgery in the future.  He was injured at work.  A friend of Janet Hadden, Carrie, had a heart attack recently, and was awaiting word on what course of action the doctors would pursue with her, as she is a young woman.  The six-week-old son of Doug and Erin Hankinson, who are members of the church at Lancaster, Ohio, will have surgery to remove cataracts from his eyes on September 9th and 16th.  His name is Grady.  Remember, also, member of Juanita Brown’s family (brother, Donnie with emphysema; a sister, Martha, taking chemotherapy; another sister, Virginia, who has had a possible stroke), those with cancer, others are home and ill, those serving in the armed forces (Dan Garrison, Matt Laubacher, Justin May, David Woofter), our Shut-Ins, and the leadership of the 38th Street church.

Our Sympathy:  We were both surprised and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of sister Mary Peterson, early on Sunday morning, August 31st.  She had been taken to Mercy Medical Center from the Altercare facility in Navarre, and passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.  Even though Mary had been ill for a long time, her death came as a shock to the family.  Mary was 83 years old.  We extend our condolences to her daughter, Barb Nutter, her sister Marlen Thompson, and all of her family at this time of loss.  A funeral service for Mary was conducted on Thursday of this past week, September 4th.

Thank You:  A special “Thank You” goes out to Sonya Ash and Heather Lindenberger for sorting, labeling, and arranging the Teacher Resource Room.  Thanks, girls!
Thank you to everyone who prayed for my friend, Mrs. Contie, who had brain surgery.  She is doing well and ready for radiation treatments.  She bought a wig and is ready.  She thanks all who prayed for her and asks for continued concern and prayers while she recovers.   Janet Hadden.

THE DEVIL’S BEATITUDES

If the devil were to write his beatitudes, they would probably go something like this:

Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour once a week with their fellow Christians – they are my best workers.

Blessed are those Christians who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked – I can use them.

Blessed are the touchy who stop going to church – they are my missionaries.

Blessed are the troublemakers – they shall be called my children.

Blessed are the complainers – I’m all ears to them.

Blessed are those who are bored with the minister’s mannerisms and mistakes – for they get nothing out of his sermons.

Blessed is the church member who expects to be invited to his own church – for he is a part of the problem instead of the solution.

Blessed are those who gossip – for they shall cause strife and divisions that please me.

Blessed are those who are easily offended – for they will soon get angry and quit.

Blessed are those who do not give their offering to carry on God’s work – for they are my helpers.

Blessed is he who professes to love God but hates his brother and sister – for he shall be with me forever.

Blessed are you who, when you read this, think it is about other people and not you – I’ve got you, too.
