LIFE LINES

We greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and welcome everyone to the assemblies of the church here on this Lord’s Day.  Members and guests alike, all are appreciated and, to our visitors today, we offer a special greeting and our thanks that you chose to be here today.  Our prayer is that you, and the members of the 38th Street family, find the fellowship, worship, and study both beneficial and enlightening.

********************
Last Thursday we marked the seventh anniversary of the worst terrorist attack upon American soil ever.  That day, September 11th, 2001, joins other dates as one of infamy (to borrow that word from President Franklin Roosevelt in referring to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941) in the history of the United States.  We cannot either forget, or become complacent about, what happened on that terrible day.

This evening we will reflect upon not only that day, but the strength of this nation seven years later.  For all of our faults and flaws, we are still “One Nation Under God,” and that will be the theme of a lesson combining words and song.

There are those who raise serious challenges to our Judeo Christian roots and heritage, who want to separate every aspect of national life from God or any references to Him and His way.  The challenge to the church and to individual Christians is obvious.  Christians must stand up for God and His word, and that may become even more difficult in the future than it is already.

Our prayer is that God continues to bless America, as He has so richly in the past.  But, we must stand firm for, and uphold, Christian principles to be pleasing to Him.

                                                -- Lance

A PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY

Almighty God, you have given us this great land as our heritage.  We humbly pray that we may always remember your generosity and faithfully do your will.  Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education and an honorable way of life.  Defend our liberties and strengthen the resolve of the people who have come from throughout the world to make America their home.  Lead us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.  Help us to appreciate the opportunities that are ours as we struggle to bring harmony to an unsettled world.  May we balance our concern for justice with a willingness to display mercy, and may our concern for security be tempered with a willingness to take risks which will produce worthwhile change for the good of all people.  O Lord, we pray for your guidance as we work together for the best interest of our communities, our nation, our world, and the ultimate goal of peace.  When times are prosperous, let our hearts be thankful and in troubled times may our deepest trust be in you.  Amen.

Family Matters

Prayer List:  As last week began, two from the congregation remained patients at area hospitals.  Bob Franks continued to make slow progress in recovering from his recent heart bypass surgery, and attendant complications, at Aultman Hospital, and Ina Strickling was at Affinity Medical Center, and scheduled to have a surgery to repair damage to her knee at mid-week.  Bob and Judy want to sincerely thank everyone for the cards, calls, prayers, and visits during the time of Bob’s recovery.  Anna Masalko did have another stent inserted on September 2nd, and went home the next day, and Bob Dougherty (son-in-law of Bernie and JoAnn McFadden) had surgery on vertebrae in his neck on Thursday, September 4th, at Aultman Hospital.  He was released from the hospital by week’s end.  Jeannie Woods, the daughter of Wauldine Flinn, was to have colon surgery on Wednesday of this past week, and a niece of Janet Hadden, Cindy, was set for surgery for cancer this past Tuesday.  Kim Pool had a setback in her recovery from a knee repair and had to delay therapy.  She developed an infection where she had stitches.  Rich Stalnaker, Sharon’s husband, is still awaiting his surgery on his shoulder.  Eleanor Banks was to have a surgery on Tuesday of this past week.  It was outpatient in nature.  Pray as well for:  Hobert Littlefield, Vera Crock (who became ill once again last Sunday), 6-week-old Grady Hankinson, in Lancaster, Ohio, who must have cataract surgeries this past week and next week, the friend of Janet Hadden, Carrie, who had a heart attack, and our Shut-Ins.  Remember, also, those with cancer, those at home and ill, those serving in the nation’s armed forces (Dan Garrison, Matt Laubaucher, Justin May, David Woofter), and the leadership of the 38th Street church.

Congratulations:  Jennifer Delbrugge gave birth to an 8 lb. 14 oz. baby girl, Kylie Marie, at Mercy Medical Center on Wednesday, September 3rd.  We rejoice with Jennifer, Mike, and their families at this addition, and pray that all will continue to go well with mother and child, and the rest of the family.  Kylie was 20 inches long at birth.

Restoration:  We welcome back to the 38th Street family Karen Morgan, who acknowledges that she has been an unfaithful member of the Lord’s body for some time.  Karen was a member of the congregation when it was located on 9th Street SW.  Get acquainted with Karen and let her know how much you appreciate her decision to be restored to Christ’s body and to place her membership with the church on 38th Street.  Karen’s address and phone number are:  1331 Western Avenue, SW, Canton, OH, 44710.  330-477-0697.

Thank You:  We would like to thank everyone for the cards, prayers, and wonderful dinner that was served after the funeral for Mary Peterson; thanks also to Nina and Dave Witter for the edible fruit basket.  A big “Thank You” to Lance for the beautiful service for Mary.  His words of comfort got our family through a very difficult time.  In Christian Love, Barb Nutter, Marlen Thompson, and Janet Hadden.

THE INCOMPARABLE RICHES . . . OF GRACE

Why is grace such a difficult concept for us to get our arms around?  Could it be because we need first to receive it freely, and then learn to give it away?
One of my grandsons always asks me if I have any gum for him.  Since I know he will probably ask me, I try to remember to put some in my pocket each morning.  I gladly give him one piece when he asks, “Papa, do you have any gum to share?”  Now he has learned to ask for two pieces.  He puts one in his mouth and runs off with the other piece to give his older brother.  Could it be that he has learned the secret of grace?  Something is better if you give it away!
We are made alive in Christ because of His great love.  Jesus loved us so much that He gave His life on the cross to forgive us our sins.  While we can’t die for the sins of others, we can live daily for Christ showing our love by doing good works – whether it means sharing a stick of gum, shoveling snow off a neighbor’s driveway, or helping a needy person.  We are God’s workmanship, made alive in Christ to do good works and show the value of His incomparable riches.               – Mark Young (Power For Today)
