LIFE LINES

Evangelism Begins At Home

We should do everything we can to win the souls of those most precious to us, especially the members of our own family.  Jesus told His disciples to evangelize the world (Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 16:15, 16), but He also told them to begin right where they were, at home in Jerusalem (Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8).  Because of their proximity and because of the special concern we have for them, members of our own circle of family and friends are the natural ones with whom to begin sharing the gospel.

In the Old Testament, parents were required to diligently teach the Lord’s commands to their children (Deuteronomy 6:4).  In the New Testament, in Ephesians 6:4, fathers are admonished to raise their children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”  In a very strong statement in I Timothy 5:8, Paul said, “But if any one does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.”  This probably refers to physical care, but if it is crucial to cater to the physical needs of our families, how much more Timothy was positively influenced for Christ by the example of his mother and grandmother, and Peter affirms in II Peter 3:1, 2 that husbands can be won through the example of their wives.

These loved ones are uppermost in our hearts.  Of all people on earth, we want these to be saved.  We should want to spend all eternity with those who are dearest to us, especially our own flesh and blood.  Let’s obey the Great Commission to go into all the world, but let us not overlook those who are closest to us.  When you assemble to worship the Lord on His special day, wouldn’t you like to be surrounded by those who are dearest to you in this life?  Let’s win our friends and family for Christ!

2009 CHRISTIAN TRAINING SCHOOL

FEBRUARY 9TH through MARCH 9TH
7:15 P.M.

FOR 5 CONSECUTIVE MONDAYS

Family Matters

Prayer List:   As this past week began, Juanita Jacobs was admitted to Affinity Medical Center, in Massillon.  She had gone to the hospital during the morning Bible class period, because of an accelerated heart rate.  Having been examined at the hospital, she was kept for further treatment.  Paul Hines has had a similar problem recently.  While not hospitalized, he desires our prayers, so does Sharon Saunier, who has bronchitis.  Sharon was scheduled for teeth extractions this past week, and for pre-testing for an upcoming surgery as well.  Lois Bowser, the niece of Mildred Myers and a former member of the congregation, had surgery recently and is now recovering.  Ron Litman had been admitted to Aultman Hospital with pneumonia, and was not doing well at all.  Beth Ann Gibson (Ellen Day’s niece) has been taken from the intensive care unit at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.  Her most recent condition was listed as “fair.”  It is hoped, because of some improvement in her physical condition, that Marlene Lopez, the sister of Winnie German, can have needed heart bypass surgery soon.  Lorraine Hunt continues to suffer from the effects of a recent fall.  Remember her and all of the congregation’s Shut-Ins, along with:  Melissa Cartledge (one of our newest members); Bonnie Day (daughter-in-law of Ellen Day); Kayden Mahaffey, age 2; Howard Shaffer, the brother of Joyce Asher, who has been diagnosed with a lump that must be biopsied.  Before that can be done, however, there is a need to repair an aneurism; Bob Stotler and his family, on the death of his mother-in-law, who resided in the Steubenville area.  Remember, also, those with cancer, those at home and ill, those in the armed forces, and the leadership of the 38th Street church.

Birthday Open House:  There will be an open house in honor of Gertrude Spencer’s 90th birthday, on Saturday, February 21st, from 2-4, here at the building.  Come and help Gertie celebrate this great milestone!

Christian Training School:  Begins tomorrow evening at 7:15.  If you have not signed up for a class, and would like to, you may do so that evening.  There are twelve great courses this year.

NOTE: There will be no Elders/Preachers/Deacons meeting
this month.  Check with your liaison about your meeting.  The next Elders/Preachers/Deacons meeting is scheduled for April 19th.

Help Needed:  Volunteers are needed for Children’s Bible Time (during worship) for the months of June, July, and August.  If you can help, see Stephen Lindenberger.
Also, Shirley McGill is looking for Nursery Staff for Sunday evenings during the month of June.

LADIESKeep February 21st open for our annual Ladies’ Breakfast.  Please attend and have your heart filled.  Sign up on the sheet posted on the east-wing bulletin board if you will be attending.

Babysitter Needed:  Scott and Tiffany Craddock are still looking for someone to stay with Kaci while they are at work, especially on Fridays.  If you can help, contact the office.

Special Collection:   There will be an additional collection taken today, for the church’s Christian Assistance Fund.  This fund has helped many brothers and sisters in Christ, here at 38th Street and elsewhere, over the years.  Prayerfully consider giving to its support, in addition to your regular weekly contribution.

Snow Watch: In the event of bad weather, please be cautious as you travel, and do not take risks.  If in doubt as to whether services have been canceled, listen to 101.7 on the radio and on your television Fox 8 (Cleveland).

VACATION:  Thinking about vacation?  How about taking a vacation that will help you grow stronger in the Lord?  Each year NOCYC has a “Family Camp” in late July, early August.  This year’s Family Camp will be July 26th through July 31st, at the camp in Lisbon.  This is a great time of learning, fellowship and fun.  Please consider this as you plan your vacation in 2009.  Ladies . . . you do not have to cook all week!  There are flyers in the foyer; you can ask Stephen Lindenberger or Earl Ash any specific questions you may have.  Come join us and be renewed!

2009 Ladies’ Retreat:   This year’s retreat will be at the Carlisle Inn at Sugarcreek, March 6th and 7th.  Ladies, your final payment is due to Kathy Lindenberger by Sunday, February 22nd.

NOCYC NEWS There will be a winter fund raising dinner on February 28, 2009 at the North Canton Church of Christ building.  Ohio Valley University Ambassadors will also be performing for our entertainment.  We NEED your help.  Please plan on joining us for good food, fun, and fellowship and welcoming another year of Christian camping.  Contact Rod Stockdale at 330.499.4303 for ticket information or more details.
