LIFE LINES
As we now have arrived at the first Sunday in April, we wish to welcome everyone to the assemblies and Bible study of the Lord’s body that meets here at 38th Street. To our guests today, we offer a very special greeting, and thank you for joining the spiritual family at 38th Street today.

I want to correct an oversight in last week’s bulletin. At the end of the article “When Your Hut’s On Fire,” I neglected to identify the source of this material. I thank Ellen Day for that submission, and apologize to her for neglecting to note this last week.
This afternoon Earl and I will be leaving for Parkersburg, West Virginia, to attend the 51st annual Ohio Valley University Lectureship. The theme for this year’s lessons is “From Galilee To Jerusalem: Studies In Luke.” The lectures begin this evening and continue through Wednesday afternoon, although we plan to return home at lunchtime that day, and be present for that evening’s assembly. We are looking forward to this time of renewal, learning, and fellowship with others from all over the United States. It’s great that we have such a quality lectureship so close to us. We would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take advantage of these lectures at OVU. They are well worth the time.
Have a great day and week, and we’ll see you on Wednesday evening. -- LANCE

“First Things”
In 1980 I entered the United States Army. I had taken some tests and been told that my “MOS,” or
Military Occupational Specialty, was to be that of a Military Policeman. I was sent to Fort McClelland, Alabama, for basic training and for Advanced Individual Training or AIT.
While in basic training I was taught about proper military behavior, Army history, the importance of recognizing various ranks, as well as marksmanship and other military concepts.
One thing that I was told over and over while in training was that I was a “soldier first.” That statement was made very intentionally, to remind me that no matter what my MOS was going to be, I was a soldier First!
It was during this time that there were many Americans being held hostage by the Iranian government. One of the reasons we were being trained was because there was a high probability that we were going to be sent to rescue those Americans from that situation.
Some of the guys I was in training with were going into the medical field, some were going into electronics and others to various other needed areas, but we were all considered soldiers first, and that was to be remembered as our first duty.
In the Lord’s church today there are many jobs (MOS’s if you will) that need to be done. There are areas of work in maintaining the building, in fellowshipping, teaching, working in the Food Assistance Ministry, and the list goes on. These are important works! However, as in the US Army, there is one job that is primary and fundamental for each of us, and that is that we are to be “soul winners” first.
It is possible for each of us to get so busy in good works that we forget what our “primary mission” as the church of Christ really is, and that is to be preaching and teaching the gospel to every creature (Matthew 28:19-20).
Let us not forget that we, too, are “soldiers first” in the Lord’s Army, and that we must do our primary task before we do anything else. We must focus on First things first!

Family Matters
Prayer List: Both Jim and Dolores Ladson had outpatient procedures done the week before this last, and spent time recuperating at home. Dale Hughes went to Aultman Hospital that same week. He was diagnosed with an attack of Bell’s palsy, along with heart problems. He was released after a brief hospital stay. Marlene Lopez (Winnie German’s sister in Virginia) had made some improvement in her condition. Winnie was able to return home at the beginning of this past week. Georgia Daverio’s mother, Mary Poulos, is dealing with extreme fatigue and is undergoing tests to determine the cause. Continue to pray for Karen Morgan, in Aultman Hospital, and all those with cancer, Ed Ramsier, Lynna Beaber, John and Bonnie Day, and Paul Huth. Also, remember the family of Keith Kull. Keith’s brother in New York, Lewis, Jr., became critical once again at the close of the week before this last. It was not expected that he would live much longer. Pray for our Shut-Ins, those in military service, those at home and ill, and the leadership of the church here at 38th Street.
Death: We extend our sincerest sympathy to Floyd Kinney at the passing of his brother, Harold Kinney, Jr., last Sunday evening. His funeral service was held in Woodsfield, Ohio, last Friday.
New Address: Brenda Garvin has a new address: 2907 30th Street NE, Canton OH 44705.
Also, Cathy Clouse, who recently placed membership with the congregation here at 38th Street: 5247 13th Street SW – Apt. 203, Canton OH 44710. Phone number: 330-309-2649.
Ladies’ Dinner: The “Mothers Day” dinner (formerly the Mother-Daughter dinner) will be on Saturday, May 9th, at the 38th Street building. The change of name is to encourage all of our ladies to attend this annual evening of fellowship, even if they do not have a daughter, or mother living. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the Ladies’ Activities bulletin board in the east wing of the building, and everyone is asked to indicate their intent to attend the dinner as soon as possible. The cost of the meal is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children, 3-12, and under 3, free. Money should be given to Sharon Blocher or Judy Franks, by Sunday, May 3rd. Stacy Lowe, from the Alliance congregation will be the guest speaker, and the evening begins at 5:00.
Please Take Note: The safety of all of our members and guests who attend the services here is of prime concern. Last Sunday morning, one of the members was struck in the face, by a thrown ball, in the parking lot of the building. There were some injuries, but not severe ones, for which we are thankful. To our young people, we want to emphasize that all such activity should be confined to the area around the basketball hoop, at the east end of the lot. Stay away from the area where cars are parked, for the safety of everyone. We do not wish to discourage any type of fellowship, among younger or older people, but the place to play with any equipment is at the far east end of the parking lot. Thank You.
Teachers Needed: There is a need for teachers for next quarter. See Stephen Lindenberger if you can help. Sunday AM – Grades 1-3 (teacher for May and June only). Wednesday – Kindergarten.
S.C.C.A. NEWS: We will be having a Parking Lot Sale on Saturday, April 18th, so be collecting yard sale type items to donate for our sale!
From the Food Ministry Folks: At the present time, there is no longer a need for plastic bags; however, you may continue to bring in paper bags, as they are still needed.
Ladies’ Night Out: Tomorrow, April 6th, at 6:30 PM. Bring a snack to share.
Going Green!! Spring is almost here and that means baseball season is just around the corner! It also means the grass will be growing and we need to schedule mowing crews. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board if you would like to help. If you have any questions, see Mark Daverio, Steve Moser, or Mike Moss.
OVU NEWS: Ohio Valley University is continuing with their “Golden Anniversary Campaign” and contributions may be sent to the University or given to Earl Ash, a steering committee member.

The following is a list of those items needed from 38th Street: Kix Cereal, Chocolate Cake Mix, Cream of Celery Soup, Onion Soup Mix, and Velveeta Cheese. Please place your items in the west-wing hallway. Cash donations are also being accepted for perishable items.

The Family Meal
In her book The Surprising Power of Family, Miriam Weinstein explains that eating ordinary, average, everyday supper with your family is strongly linked to lower incidents of bad outcomes such as teenage drug and alcohol use, and to good qualities like emotional stability. It correlates with kindergarteners being better prepared to learn to read. (It even trumps getting read to). Regular family supper helps keep kids out of hospitals. It discourages both obesity and eating disorders. It supports your staying more connected to your extended family, your ethnic heritage, your community of faith.
The 2003 survey indicated that children and teens who share dinner with their families 5 or more nights a week were 32% likelier never to have tried cigarettes, 45% likelier to have never tried alcohol, and 24% likelier never to have smoked marijuana. “Those who eat lots of family dinners are almost twice as likely to get A’s in school as their classmates who rarely eat as a family,” Weinstein adds.
