LIFE LINES
SING, CHRISTIAN!
There once was a congregation of the Lord in a small village. They had a modest, but nice, building in which to meet. Now back in the old days, there was no air conditioning in the building, so they opened the windows from spring to fall, whenever it was warm.
The Christians there, though small in number, were known for their zealous and spirited singing to the Lord. When they worshipped during the times the windows in the church building were open, people walking by would be drawn to the beautiful and heart-felt praising of God.
Once there were two teenage youngsters who were invited to go to worship services by some friends. But their mother wouldn’t let them. She did agree that they could sit outside by one of the windows and listen, but to the singing only! When the preaching started, they had to get up and leave.
Sunday after Sunday, they sat there and listened to the beautiful singing. But an interesting thing happened. Through the words of the songs, they learned the gospel message. Eventually, a Bible study was set up and they were soon baptized into Christ. They attributed a large part of their conversion to the singing they heard week after week that whetted their appetite for the gospel. After their conversion, they gladly joined the congregation in singing out in worship of the Lord.
This is a true story as told to me by one of the sisters in the Pleasant Hill, Illinois, congregation where I recently held a gospel meeting.
In this heart-warming story is a great reminder for each and every one of us: Christian, sing! Sing out and sing to be understood. Sing with joy in your heart. Sing with great expression and feeling. Sing to give great praise to the great God. Sing, Christian – you never know whom you may influence!
