LIFE LINES

Welcome to everyone on this Lord’s Day.  We appreciate your desire to worship God and to remember His Son in the communion service today.  We encourage everyone to be an active participant in both the assembly and the Bible classes that follow the morning worship time.  To our guests, we offer a very special greeting, and, again, we appreciate your choosing to assemble with the 38th Street family today.

****************************************

Let me re-emphasize one point today.  When anyone has a question, or comment, about matters related to the church here on 38th Street, the individuals to discuss these with are the elders of the congregation.  Talking to these good men is truly something the members of the church can, and should, feel comfortable in doing.  The men are very willing to listen to your comments and questions, and very willing to answer your concerns.  They will not reject you, embarrass you, or demean you or what you have to say.  Go to them and let them know what you find both positive and negative about the life of the 38th Street church.  They are not only good listeners, but good servants of God, who care about the souls of those under their authority, and about what God says through His word.

Do not fear these men, but respect the role they have chosen to fulfill in the Lord’s body.  To talk with them directly eliminates the possibility of remarks being misconstrued, or misquoted.  It is truly the biblical way to deal with concerns and questions.

Have a great day, and week!

WHY GO TO CHURCH?

A church-goer wrote a letter to the editor and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday.  “I’ve gone for 30 years now and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons.  But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them.  So I think I’m wasting my time and the preachers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.

That started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the editor.  It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:  “I’ve been married for 30 years now.  In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals.  But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals.  But I do know
this . . . they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work.  If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today.  Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”  When you are DOWN to nothing . . . God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible.

 MY FRIEND

I stand in Judgment now,
And feel that you’re to blame somehow.
On earth, I walked with you day by day,
And never did you point the way.

You knew the Lord in truth and glory,
But never did you tell the story.
My knowledge then was very dim;
You could have led me safely to Him.

Though we lived together on the earth,
You never told me of the second birth,
And now I stand this day condemned,
Because you failed to mention Him.

You taught me many things, that’s true,
I called you “friend” and trusted you,
But I learn now that it’s too late,
You could have kept me from this fate.

We walked by day and talked by night,
And yet you showed me not the Light.
You let me live, and love, and die,
You knew I’d never live on high.

Yes, I called you a “friend” in life,
And trusted you through joy and strife.
And yet on coming to the end,
I cannot, now, call you “My Friend.”
