LIFE LINES

Greetings to everyone, and welcome to the services and Bible study of the Northwest Church of Christ on this Lord’s Day.  To our guests we wish to extend a very special, and warm, greeting and we are truly grateful that you have chosen to assemble with the church here today.

*************************************************

The Northwest Church of Christ.  It might take some time to get used to the new name, and it will take time to fully complete the merger of two bodies of the Lord’s people into one church meeting at this 38th Street location.  But, it is an exciting time, and we are blessed to be a part of this merger and the new beginning it represents.
The insert in today’s bulletin is the complete letter that brothers Harry Rose and Ed McCullough read to the 38th Street and Market Avenue congregations on Sunday morning, June 7th.  The elders of both churches, after careful and prayerful deliberation, and a sense of the historic nature of what was proposed, agreed that it is in the best interests of both congregations to merge into one body to evangelize the Canton community, and to serve the needs of that community in a variety of other ways.  We are now one, the Northwest Church of Christ in Canton.
The announcement of this merger was well-received in both churches, and the process of making the merger a physical, as well as a spiritual, reality is now moving forward.  This evening we will meet here for a combined service of worship, at the usual six o’clock time.  Keith Kull, the pulpit minister for the former Market Avenue church, will be delivering the evening message.  The service will be followed by an informational session where people can raise questions directed to the elders of the Northwest church.  I urge everyone to be present this evening and to participate in the fellowship of worship with the saints from both former congregations.
Throughout the next weeks, there will be various opportunities for Northwest members to get to know one another.  One such occasion will be a dinner for senior members (the Young-In-Heart and Golden Agers) in August.   All of our older members are invited to enjoy this evening together with the senior saints from the former Market Avenue congregation.  Look for the sign-up sheet on the east-wing bulletin board and indicate there if you plan to attend this evening of fun and fellowship.
From this point on, we must think of the former two churches as one, in name and in fact.  We must also keep in mind the purpose for the church:  to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ to souls in danger of eternal condemnation, to nurture and grow God’s family, and to meet the needs, physical, emotional, and spiritual, of the people we encounter.  As the Northwest church, we have additional resources and talents to devote to these goals.  As the Northwest church we can make an impact upon the world around us.  As the Northwest church we will begin to write another chapter in the history of the Lord’s people in this area.  I hope you are as excited as I am at the prospect of bringing glory to our God as the Northwest church.
In the spirit of unity and brotherhood that is taught in the New Testament, let us “rise up to build” a congregation known for its adherence to scripture in all things, its generous and benevolent spirit, and its passion for teaching the lost the truth about Jesus Christ.
“. . . speaking the truth in love, may [we] grow up in all things into Him who is the head – Christ – from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love”  (Ephesians 4:15-16, New King James Version).
God bless us all, and have a great week.

Get Married First

About ten million people live with an unmarried partner, about 8 percent of U.S. couples, most of whom are in the 25 to 34 age group.  Women view cohabitation as a commitment taken before marriage to that partner, while men see it as a step before an actual commitment.  Living together is illegal in Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Virginia, and West Virginia.

God’s Word says that commitment comes before marriage and marriage before sleeping together.  “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4).  Think about it.

“From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh:  so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.”  (Mark 10:6-8).
